Friends Summer Adventure Program

This island-based day program offers children, ages 4 to 14 years, a variety of "adventures" nurturing in them the spirit and values of the Friends School of Portland while welcoming new friends into the community. Activities will be child-centered with an emphasis on experiential learning and community building.  The setting of Mackworth Island will be central to the adventure experience.  Mackworth Island offers its rich resources as a backdrop to continuing to build community and empower kids to develop and strengthen their physical, emotional, creative and leadership potential.

Adults experienced in working with youth and members of the FSP community will staff the program.  Our new director, Oren Stevens, M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the Stonecoast program at USM, teaches at the Telling Room, and coordinates for the Men's Resource Center.  Both as a dancer and outdoor enthusiast, Oren is passionate about fostering creative and varied learning. His experiences include teaching in Beijing, China, a successful career in corporate marketing, and many years as a craftsman timber framer.

Those interested in an overnight camp will want to explore Friends Camp in South China, Maine.

A TYPICAL DAILY SCHEDULE

  • Morning Circle: quiet group relection, singing
  • Small group time: games, music, gardening, reading aloud, arts and crafts, island exploration, cooperative games, team building activities, science/ecology, fairy house building, beach combing, nature-based creations, free play.
  • Lunch as a Community (morning session ends)
  • Afternoon Community activity period: gardening, mural painting, scavenger hunts, field games, water play, arts and crafts fair, ball sports, relays and tag games and more.
  • Closing Circle

Lunches, sunscreen, bathing suit, towel and extra clothes are to be provided by participants and can be kept in a cubby for the week.  Swimming/water sports will not be offered although sprinkler and other water games will be played.

Schedule: Summer 2011

  • Full Day: 8:30am - 2:30pm
  • Half Day: 8:30am - 12:30pm
  • Aftercare: 2:30 - 4:00pm

Registration must be for all full days or all half days in any given week.  Aftercare is a full week sign-up.

Week 1: 6/20-6/24

Week 2: 6/27-7/1

Week 3: 7/5-7/8  [Note there is no program on July 4]

Week 4: 7/11-7/15

Week 5: 7/18-7/22

Week 6: 7/25-7/29

Costs 

1 week sessions:

  • Full Days =  $215     {$175 week of July 5}
  • Half Days =  $170    {$135 week of July 5}
  • Aftercare = $50
