Primary Aftercare Provider

Friends School of Portland seeks a patient, caring individual to serve in its Aftercare Program with a focus on children in grades 1-3. This person must have ample experience working with primary-age children and a joy of the outdoors. Experience could include camp counseling, babysitting, coaching, volunteer work, etc. Majors in Education are preferred, but not required. The applicant should identify with the Quaker values of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship, as these are the cornerstones of our school and the Aftercare Program.

A typical day in the Primary Aftercare Program looks like this:

  • Children arrive to classroom, staff checks in with the classroom teacher dropping off  this time to gain any important insight about a particular child’s day

  • Children wash their hands and prepare for snack

  • Serve food to children and guide appropriate manners

  • Children clear their places and use the bathroom

  • Children get dressed for outdoor play time or leave for activity classes

  • Children head out as a group to one or more designated areas to play

  • The Aftercare Program consists of anywhere between 30-45 children daily divided into 3 groups. Group I is our Early Childhood group, Group II is grades 1 through 4, and Group III is grades 5 through 8

  • Children  play outside every day year round in all types of weather from 3:30-4:30 or 5. Indoor options may come available later in the afternoon and when daylight fades.

  • Faculty communicates on walkie-talkies to keep track of children, open/closed play areas, parent pick-ups, etc.

  • Faculty can guide play at times, and children will guide their own play as well

  • Faculty members are encouraged to help children resolve conflict, but they may always call to the Aftercare Coordinator for help

You will be responsible for helping to serve snack as well as general support and supervision of children during free play time. You will be supported by the Aftercare Coordinator. Responsibilities will also include attending a weekly meeting with other Aftercare faculty members. Friends School of Portland works on an academic calendar beginning with faculty days in late August  (this will include a mandatory Aftercare Faculty meeting); the school year ends on June 7.

This is a part-time position (15 hours/week):  Monday-Thursday 2:45 to 5:30pm and Friday 1:30-5:30pm at the rate of $14 per hour. There are no benefits with this position. We are seeking applicants who can make a commitment for the entire school year.

Please send your resume, contacts for three references, and any questions to Linda Ashe-Ford, FSP Aftercare Coordinator, at linda@friendsschoolofportland.org and Head of School, Jenny Rowe, at jenny@friendsschoolofportland.org no later than July 31, 2018.
