7-8 Grade GarageBand Project:

The 7-8 grade class wrapped up their study of music of the 19th - 21st centuries by becoming composers using GarageBand. Throughout the year we looked at both popular and classical music through several lenses - through the purely musical lens of harmony, rhythm, form, tempo, timbre and melody, and through a socio-political lens that identifies music as an amplifier of change in our culture. For our GarageBand project, students spent several music classes writing their own pieces by modifying GarageBand loops as well as creating original loops, and preparing to discuss them in terms of motivation and our musical lens. The pieces were then performed at an all-school assembly. Here are a few samples!
